A Microelectrode Stimulation System for a Cortical Neuroprosthesis
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes an integrated microelectrode stimulator for intracortical neuroprosthesis. The implantable microelectrode stimulator uses flip-chip technology to be fully implantable without wiring, reducing the risk of infection and increasing robustness. It is small enough to be undetectable and has low power consumption which can be obtained directly from the carrier, through an RF low-coupling transformer, discarding the need for batteries. The system architecture and circuit techniques which overcome some of the application issues are presented. Simulation results and the layout of a prototype prove its feasibility.

متن کاملTowards a Cortical Visual Neuroprosthesis for the Blind
Our main objective is to demonstrate the feasibility of a cortical neuroprosthesis, interfaced with the visual cortex, as a means through which a limited but useful visual sense may be restored to profoundly blind people. Although there are still a number of important unanswered questions and many problems have to be solved before a Cortical Visual Neuroprosthesis can be considered a viable cli...
متن کاملVisual Cortical Neuroprosthesis: A System Approach
This chapter describes a complete visual neuroprosthesis wireless system designed to restore useful visual sense to profoundly blind people. This visual neuroprosthesis performs intracortical microstimulation through one or more arrays of microelectrodes implanted into the primary visual cortex. The whole system is composed by a primary unit located outside the body and a secondary unit, implan...
متن کاملMicroelectrode Arrays
The development of implantable devices which enable fully wireless transmission of brain signals, recorded by microelectrode arrays (MEA) as dynamical neural circuit information, is one important goal for advancing human neuroprostheses. Current brain sensing research for prostheses via first clinical trials is offering tantalizing glimpses for the future, even if these technologies are cumbers...
متن کاملFunctional reorganization of primary visual cortex induced by electrical stimulation in the cat
Compared to the high degree of plasticity observed in a juvenile, mature sensory cortices have long been held to be immutable but, recently, researchers have suggested some plasticity persists in the mature cortex. Cortical reorganization has particular saliency to the development of a cortically based, sensory neuroprosthesis, which will chronically evoke activity through electrical stimulatio...
